      FOR DOCTORS

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS by PHYSICIANS RESEARCH™ benefits the aging male, whose testosterone levels decrease, while less desirable hormones (estrogen, luteininzing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) & prolactin) increase.  Increased activity of 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), while the estrogen reduces DHT clearance.  Overall DHT elevations stimulate prostate cell growth and impair glutathione peroxidase increasing oxidative stress, and inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. This subsequent inflammation, swelling and prostatic tissue overgrowth is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) commonly seen in men over fifty years.

The symptoms associated with BPH are lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) which include filling or irritating symptoms such as frequency, urgency, dysuria and nocturia and voiding or obstructive symptoms including poor stream, hesitancy, terminal dribbling, incomplete voiding and overflow incontinence. LUTs and erectile dysfunction may be linked by the presence of diffuse atherosclerosis of the lower urinary tract.

The known risk factors for erectile dysfunction (ED) and LUTS/BPH overlap and include hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and smoking.  Epidemiological data suggest that the presence of two of these known risk factors for atherosclerosis results in a significant increase in the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) compared to the presence of one or no risk factors.  A multi-national survey found that the more severe the LUTS, the more frequent the presence of ED.  A hypothesis has been postulated that an impaired NO/cGMP-signaling may contribute to the pathophysiology of BPH.

SAW PALMETTO Serenoa repens berries have traditionally been used by Native Americans as a diuretic and sexual tonic, as well as for stomachache and dystentery. As per the NHPD monograph 2008, Saw Palmetto is used in herbal medicine to help relieve urologic symptoms (weak urine flow, incomplete voiding, frequent daytime and night time urination) associated with mild to moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The main constituents found in Saw Palmetto are free saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and their esters, triglycerides, phytosterols (B-sitosterols, campesterol, stigmasterol, cycloartenol), aliphatic alcohols and various polyprenic compounds. Saw Palmetto seems to inhibit 5-alpha reductase, lowering DHT conversion, and blocks DHT & estrogen receptors within the prostate. Less DHT overall results due to reduced conversion & binding and greater DHT elimination, minimizes prostate inflammation, swelling and growth. Clinically studies have demonstrate positive benefits of Saw Palmetto on nocturia, urinary flow rate and residual volume.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 160 mg of SAW PALMETTO Serenoa repens, standardized to min. 45% fatty acids and sterols, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health.

FLOWER POLLEN EXTRACT Secale cereale is a standardized, hypoallergenic extract of rye pollen Cernitin®, certified gluten-free, and a registered pharmaceutical product throughout western Europe, Japan, Korea and Argentina. Its use in Europe for over 30 years has allowed several double-blind clinical trials showing 85% of men benefited from effective reduction of their lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and BPH. Cernitin® extract sources the pollen from various plants to affect prostate edema & inflammation. Its decongestant effect inhibits inflammatory prostaglandin and leukotriene sythesis, reducing 5-LOX & COX-2 enzymes to disrupt the arachidonic cascade. This allows improvement in urinary voiding difficulties, as prostate volume is reduced and fibrosis is prevented.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 126 mg of CERNITIN® FLOWER POLLEN extract to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health.

TRIBULUS Tribulus terrestris extract may act as a botanical aphrodisiac, through enhancing healthy hormonal production of testosterone, and its precursors androstenedione and DHEA. Aging males often experience Andropause symptoms, including low sexual desire and function, due to the significant decline in testosterone. An inverse relationship has been demonstrated in the Massachusetts Male Aging Study. Logically, increasing age predisposes increased ED prevalence, and decreased DHEA blood levels.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 120 mg of TRIBULUS Tribulus terrestris, standardized to min. 45% saponins, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health, and enhancing healthy hormonal balance.

L-ARGININE, a conditionally-essential amino acid crucial for the aging male, as L-Arginine requirements escalate with aging, physical stress or illness, in its function for nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, growth hormone release and energy metabolism.

Both ED and atherosclerosis share the issue of reduced NO bioavailability affecting the resultant vascular changes. In fact, 75% of men with ischemic heart disease suffer from ED. Erectile Dysfunction patients also exhibit hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia and smoking habits. Patients with cardiovascular risk demonstrate an 11% greater likelihood of moderate or complete ED compared to their disease-free, same age cohort. Various studies have shown correlations between ED and ischemic heart disease, and severe ED patients had a 16% risk of severe ischemic heart disease.

There is epidemiologic evidence indicating LUTS and ED are strongly linked. Research suggests that treatments used for ED could also be effective in treatment of LUTS. ED treatments include those that target the Nitric Oxide (NO)/cGMP pathway. It has been found that the NO/cGMP pathway is a regulator of smooth muscle contractility. Accumulation of cGMP has been shown to lead to smooth muscle cell relaxation. NO has been found to play a pivotal role in the relaxation of male penile erectile tissue. The smooth muscle tone of the urethra, prostate and bladder neck has also been found to be controlled by NO-mediated mechanisms.

NO is synthesized from L-arginine and the ingredient is commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is proposed that NO donors like L-arginine can be effective in the treatment of ED through its action on the NO/cGMP pathway. Evidence from clinical trials investigate the use of L-Arginine to treat ED have been positive. Clinical investigations of drugs acting on the NO/cGMP pathway have been shown to be effective in relieving LUTS in patients. L-arginine is thus included in MEN’S HEALTH PLUS by PHYSICIAN RESEARCH to act as a NO donor, to relax prostate and/or bladder smooth muscle, to improve LUTS.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 100 mg of L-Arginine, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health, and enhancing healthy hormonal balance.

MACA Lepidium meyenii, a medicinal root historically used from Peru, has shown to positively affect sexual desire and improve erectile function. Maca root, containing fatty acids and essential amino acids, has been traditionally used for chronic fatigue, hormonal imbalances, impotence and to enhance fertility and sexual stamina.

Maca has a history of use as a food staple, as well as traditional use for improvement of sexuality and fertility by residents of the Peruvian Andes. It has been cultivated in Peru for over 2000 years. The indigenous people of Peru have traditionally eaten the hypocotyls of maca as a staple food. Reports indicate that 50-100g dry Maca is traditionally eaten in one meal or 0.71-1.42g of dry root per kg of body weight. Hypocotyls can be eaten fresh, dried and boiled for later consumption, or used in the production of beverages.

Maca has also been shown to have anti-proliferative effects and may mitigate prostate weight increase induced by testosterone treatment. Animal studies on Maca have demonstrated it can reduce prostate size in rats and mice in which hyperplasia had been induced with testosterone enanthate. Maca contains glucosinolates and phytosterols that have been shown to have anti-proliferative activities.

Maca has been shown to scavenge free radicals and provide cytoprotection under oxidative stress conditions. The presence of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species can induce inflammatory reactions. Inflammation has been stated as playing a significant role in the development of BPH. Maca’s ability to scavenge these reactive species can reduce inflammatory actions and along with other ingredients in the MEN’S HEALTH PLUS by PHYSICIANS RESEARCH™ assist in the relief of BPH. Maca has also been around to reduce the effects of stress and increase generalized resistance to various noxious and stressful stimuli.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 100 mg of MACA Lepidium meyenii, standardized to min. 0.6% macamides and macaenes, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health, and enhancing healthy hormonal balance.

PYGEUM Pygeum africanum has been used medicinally for thousands of years by traditional African healers to treat bladder and urination disorders, notably symptoms associated with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Historically used as a tea, the Pygeum bark was powdered and ingested orally for bladder and urination conditions. Pygeum has shown to improve urinary flow, volume of void, reduce residual urinary volume, and reduce day and night urinary frequency.

Pygeum extracts from the bark work through hormone-like actions to reduce tissue inflammation. The beneficial components, primarily phytosterols, terpenes and fatty acid esters, reduce cholesterol synthesis in the prostate, limiting androgen synthesis and minimizing DHT exposure to the prostate cells. Local inflammatory mediation is reduced as Pygeum inhibits biosynthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins. Other beneficial effects may be from Pygeum’s inhibition of prostate growth factors.

The recommended dose of 100 mg for this ingredient is within the dose shown to be effective in clinical trials. The ingredient will also work in conjunction with other ingredients in MEN’S HEALTH PLUS to support the claim of the product which is to relieve urological symptoms associated with mild benign prostate hyperplasia.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 50 mg of PYGEUM Pygeum africanum, standardized to min. 14% triterpenes including beta-sitosterol & 0.5% n-docosanol, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health.

LONG JACK Eurycoma longifolia Components of Eurycoma longifolia, also known in Malaysia as Tongkat Ali, have been used in traditional and folk medicine. Extracts of the plant are generally believed to be useful in the treatment of multiple disorders and syndromes. The ingredient is traditionally used as an aphrodisiac and has been shown to enhance libido.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 50 mg of LONG JACK Eurycoma longifolia, standardized to min. 22% eurypeptides, 40% glycosaponins, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health, and enhancing healthy hormonal balance.

ASIAN GINSENG Panax ginseng has been used for over 2,000 years, with Chinese medicine practitioners using its tonic and restorative benefits to promote health and longevity. Long has it been prescribe to improve stress resistance, physical & sexual stamina, concentration and work efficiency in both the healthy and those with aging, degenerative conditions.

The NHPD monograph states Panax ginseng is used in herbal medicine to help enhance physical capacity/ performance. Like other ingredients in MEN’S HEALTH PLUS, Panax ginseng has been shown to enhance NO synthesis and it is suggested that the ingredient could treat complications due to impaired endothelial L-arginine-NO activity. As stated above, the treatment of LUTS could be achieved through relaxation of smooth muscle cells via NO-mediated mechanisms. Panax ginsengattains its primary activity from saponin glycosides, ginsenosides, which have cardioprotective, immunostimulatory, anti-fatigue, and hepatoprotective physiological and pharmacological effects. It is thought that ginsenosides increase nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, which plays an important role in penile erection.

Panax ginseng has a history of safe use and has shown to be safe in clinical evidence. Clinical research suggests Panax ginseng possesses the ability to improve erectile function, through mediating increase NO to improve penile hemodynamics.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 30 mg of ASIAN GINSENG Panax ginseng, standardized to min. 80% ginsenosides, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health, and enhancing healthy hormonal balance.

NORTH AMERICAN GINSENG Panax quniquefolius has been traditionally used in herbal medicine to help maintain a healthy immune system as per the NHPD monograph (November 2009).

North American ginseng may offer immune benefits, a 2005 study from the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggests. For the study, researchers told 323 adults to take two capsules of either North American ginseng or a placebo every day for four months. Study results showed that members of the North American ginseng group had fewer colds over the course of cold season. When they did come down with colds, those given American ginseng had less severe symptoms and shorter duration of sickness (compared to those assigned to the placebo).

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 30 mg of AMERICAN GINSENG Panax quinquefolius, standardized to min. 80% ginsenosides, to assist in maintaining a healthy immune system.

MUIRA PUAMA Ptychopetalum olacoides, an indigenous plant in the Amazon area of Brazil, wherein the trunk bark and root contain the medicinal effects as an aphrodisiac and adaptogen. Ptychopetalum olacoides has shown benefits in adaptation to stress, potential mood-modulating properties and may enhance libido and sexual function demonstrated with in vivo studies.

An ethnopharmacological literature survey was conducted on plants native to Brazil that have been identified as Popular Use Related to the Adaptogenic Effect (PURAE). The authors noted four species that have been studied previously in relation to effects that are considered as part of an adaptogen effect (anti-stress, memory enhancement, increased physical and/or sexual performance): Heteropterys aphrodisiaca (Malpighiaceae), Paullinia cupana (Sapindaceae), Ptychopetalum olacoides (Olacaceae), and Turnera diffusa (Turneraceae).

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 30 mg of MUIRA PUAMA Ptychopetalum olacoides, to assist in maintaining healthy sexual function.

HORNY GOAT WEED Epimedium grandiflorum According to Traditional Chinese medicine, Herba epimedium medicines, from which horny goat weed is derived, have long been used to treat disorders such as dementia, fatigue, impotence, and arthralgia. Herba Epimedii is listed in the Pharmacopoiea of the Peoples Republic of China (2005) and is traditionally used to treat LUTS symptoms such as impotence and seminal emission. Historical data reports that Epimedium species (ie. Horny Goat Weed) have been utilized for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in Traditional Chinese Medicine for many years.

Icariin (ICA) is the active moiety of Epimedium species and has been demonstrated to exert inhibitory activity against phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) in vitro. In addition to an erectogenic role, it has been suggested that ICA has testosterone-mimetic properties. These effects lend credence to the use of ICA for the management of sexual problems.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 30 mg of HORNY GOAT WEED Epimedium grandiflorum, standardized to min. 60% icariin, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health, enhancing hormonal balance and sexual function.

STINGING NETTLE Urtica dioica aerial parts are traditionally used in herbal medicine as a diuretic, which affects LUTS associated with BPH, as per the Health Canada monograph 2008. Urtica dioicahas been shown to convert testosterone to estradiol by inhibiting its relevant enzyme, aromatase. The pathogenesis of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) has been implicated to be increased aromatase activity and the consequential increased levels of estradiol. Urtica extracts are not as well researched as Saw Palmetto or Pygeum, but reports indicate disruption of DHT receptor binding like Saw Palmetto, and like Pygeum, it inhibits prostate hyperproliferation of cells. Another beneficial effect of Urtica is its ability to modulate sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) to its receptor sites on prostate membranes.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUScontains 25 mg of STINGING NETTLE Urtica dioica, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health.

GINKGO Ginkgo biloba is another ingredient that is added through to assist in smooth muscle tissue through Nitric Oxide (NO)-mediated pathways. Studies have also shown that Ginkgo can relax vascular smooth muscle, increase NO availability and has been shown to be effective in treating ED. These actions can be beneficial in relieving BPH symptoms.

Anti-depressant-induced sexual dysfunction can improve with Ginkgo biloba use. Male geriatric patients initially taking Ginkgo for memory notice improved erections, which were compromised secondary to anti-depressant use. This type of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) results from selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) therapeutic activity.

Dysfunction in the human sexual response results from central nervous system suppressing erections via the sympathetic nervous system and the paragigantocellular nucleus (PGN). PGN neurons signal the erection-trigger area in the spine, releasing serotonin which inhibits pro-erectile neurotransmitters, that inhibits NO synthase, reducing NO release into penile smooth muscle. It has been proposed that increasing serotonin levels in the CNS inhibit pro-erectile physiological mechanisms, hence millions of North Americans on SSRI drugs may suffer from Erectile Dysfunction.

In combination with the synergistic compilation of botanicals and nutrients in MEN’S HEALTH PLUS, Ginkgo may benefit overall vascular perfusion by improving NO availability.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 30 mg of GINKGO Ginkgo biloba, standardized to min. 24% ginkgo flavones glycosides and 6% terpene lactones, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health, enhancing hormonal balance and sexual function.

ZINC Zinc bisglycinate provides greater absorption and bioavailabilty for its crucial role within the prostate, with the highest concentration of Zinc over other organs. Prolactin increases with age, as testosterone declines, which increases testosterone absorption, and excess testosterone stimulation increases the likelihood of prostate disorders. Zinc disrupts the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, reducing dihydrotestosterone conversion from testosterone, which prevents malignant and benign proliferative changes to the prostate. Zinc supplementation has demonstrated this by reducing the size and symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

Androgens increase Zinc intestinal uptake, whereas estrogens increased in BPH, impair Zinc uptake in the gut.

As per the Health Canada monograph 2009, zinc is a factor in maintaining a healthy immune system and support general health. The recommended dosage as per the monograph is 0.7-50mg/day. The daily dosage of 10 mg for zinc within the product falls within the recommended dosage and supports the product claim.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 5 mg of ZINC as Zinc bisglycinate, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health.

LYCOPENE, a carotenoid prevalent in tomatoes, may have anti-carcinogenic, anti-atherogenic properties, and its antioxidant protection benefits prostate health. A potent quencher of singlet oxygen, Lycopene is found in high concentrations in the prostate, testes and adrenal glands. Epidemiological studies show lycopene intake inversely related to prostate disease incidences.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 5 mg of LYCOPENE, to to provide antioxidants for the maintenance of good health and assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health.

COPPER Copper bisglycinate As per the Health Canada monograph 2007, copper is a factor in the maintenance of good health. The recommended dosage as per the monograph is 0.065mg-8mg/day. The daily dosage of 1.0 mg for copper within the product falls within the recommended dosage and supports the product claim.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 500 mcg of COPPER as Copper bisglycinate, to assist in the maintenenance of good health.

SELENIUM Selenomethionine (Yeast-Free) is a factor in the maintenance of good health, as per the Health Canada monograph 2007. Prostate health and Selenium intake are related as growing evidence suggests. Selenium are integral as an antioxidant for glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase, are implicated in Selenium’s protective effect as the most abundant antioxidant, selenium-containing proteins in mammals. Evidence also suggests Selenium exhibits an anti-proliferative effect on prostate cells.

MEN’S HEALTH PLUS contains 50 mcg of SELENIUM as L-Selenomethione, to assist in maintaining prostate & urinary tract health.
